#MoreThanAShop is an initiative to inspire & encourage rural community shops to welcome folk in for more than just their shopping. This can be vital social contact & knowing they are welcome to stay awhile can mean everything. Another way to #endloneliness

Are you a community store that is #MoreThanAShop?

Do folk know that they can tarry a little longer for a chat? For some people visiting their local shop is a huge part of their social contact, maybe their ONLY contact.

As the days draw in and the nights get longer, loneliness becomes ever more obvious and painful for those experiencing it. So we want to know where these wonderful shops are, what they do and then encourage and inspire others to do the same.

Suffolk County Councillors are willing to be approached for help from their locality budgets if you need some help to achieve your #MoreThanAShop status, and there are other small grants out there too.

All #MoreThanAShop stores will get a lovely window sticker and the chance to enter a competition next Autumn to be our #MoreThanAShop of the year 2020.

You can change someone’s life simply by offering a chance to stay awhile and have a chat. Those chats can lead to new friendships and open up a wonderfully reconnected life for isolated rural residents.

On Monday 25th November we launched our new initiative at the Somersham & District Community Shop, Suffolk, with the help of their MeetUpMondays™ group!

Here’s a few words from Rural Coffee Caravan Founder Sally Fogden and Suffolk County Councillor James Finch as to why this simple idea can make such a big difference to local communities…

If you run a shop in a rural community, and this is something you could do (or are already doing), we want to hear from you too! It could be a book swap corner or a coffee machine or maybe a volunteer who is really just there to chat. Simple ideas are the best!

The fab team at CoffeeLink of Ipswich, who are long standing supporters of the Rural Coffee Caravan and who generously provide us with the delicious ground coffee we take out on our visits, are kindly offering their help once again with More Than A Shop. They are able to provide a Bravilor Bonamat Quick Filter Coffee Machine, including additional hot plate and 1 year warranty, for £200 (incl. VAT) and 25% off CoffeeLink coffee for any rural Suffolk shop joining the More Than A Shop initiative.

Do you have a space in your shop which could become a little ‘coffee corner’; providing a reason for customers to tarry a little longer for a brew and a chat? If so, then please email us to register and we’ll put you in touch with CoffeeLink!
