More Than A Shop is an initiative to inspire & encourage Suffolk’s rural shops to be more than just a provisions store for their local community.

The coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak has changed the way we need to shop for the time being, and more local shops are now providing vital services for rural communities:

  • coping with increased demand for particular items
  • offering home deliveries to customers needing to stay home or self isolate
  • managing small teams of staff which may have to take necessary time off to quarantine themselves or take care of their children
  • providing extra services outside their usual remit, such as helping with pharmacy collections,
  • all whilst facing uncertainty for their own future.

We need to celebrate & support our local shops more than ever right now! If your local shop is #MoreThanAShop to you right now, please let us know about the ways in which they are supporting your community. We will celebrate them in our gallery here, and send them a certificate to recognise the kindness and friendship they offer. They will automatically be entered into our More Than A Shop 2020 competition. The winner will be announced in the autumn.

Are you a community store that is #MoreThanAShop?

For some people, visiting their local shop was a huge part of their social contact, maybe their ONLY contact. Being able to provide extra services and home deliveries are proving to be lifelines for Suffolk residents right now.

As recommendations to stay home and restrict movements widen due to Covid-19, loneliness becomes ever more likely and painful for those experiencing it. So we want to know where these wonderful shops are, what they are doing to go that extra mile, thank them, support them and celebrate them during this difficult time, and then encourage and inspire others to do the same.

All #MoreThanAShop stores will receive a lovely window sticker and the chance to enter a competition this Autumn to be our #MoreThanAShop of the year 2020.

On Monday 25th November we launched our new initiative at the Somersham & District Community Shop, Suffolk, with the help of their MeetUpMondays™ group!

Here’s a few words from Rural Coffee Caravan Founder Sally Fogden and Suffolk County Councillor James Finch as to why this simple idea can make such a big difference to local communities…

If you run a shop in a rural Suffolk community and you are providing extra service for your customers during this time, we would love to hear from you too! Thank you for all that you are doing to help keep the members of your community safe, connected, well and stocked with essentials.
